GREAT EVENT! In 40 years of working in parks and recreation around the US, I have never been more proud to be associated with something as I was today. You have left a legacy for us to live up to in Saint Paul.

SOOOOOO.....beautiful! All the way to St. Paul my 8-year old daughter Izzy kept repeating, “What does kite flying have to do with earth day??? I don’t understand what fl ying a kite has to do with saving the earth! What does flying a kite have to do with preventing pollution!” Over and over and over again. I just calmly replied, “Well, let’s fi nd out when we get there.” We parked the car and walked up the little hill. A couple of blue kites were peeking above the edge of the hill. As we reached the crest of the hill and peered over, Izzy caught her breath, “Ooooohhhhh!!!!!!!” There we stood looking down on a magic realm. We were there for about 1-1/2 hours. Afterwards I refl ected Izzy’s own question back to her, “So what do you think this has to do with earth day?” “Well, it’s all about making wishes and promises for the earth....and if enough of these people make these promises, then they’re going to do it.” Thanks for helping us celebrate this big blue planet.

It is impossible to fully express the beauty of yesterday. It was just magical. A huge crowd showed up at starting gong. The soundscape was extraordinary, including “House to Touch the Wind” with hundreds of wind chimes…and the chant-like sound of people at the river’s edge making their “Promises to the Earth.” The scroll with the original earth day poem in a Chinese-English calligraphy style fascinated all and really brought them into the spirit and state of mind for the experience. Very moving was the fi rst kite, inscribed that morning by the East African mother of a new born Earth Day baby — we all cried. We all think it was one of the most blissful experiences!
